Operation Christmas Child has collected and distributed over 100 million gift-filled shoeboxes worldwide. In 2012, Canadians donated more than 662,000 shoe boxes worldwide. Pretty impressive results when we all come together in unity as a Country eh?
My journey with Operation Christmas Child started last year and since then I have considered it nothing but one of my life’s greatest blessings. I remember, I immediately fell in love with being able to personally put together a little something for a child in need and to be able to share the opportunity with my loved ones. When I payed my visit to Surrey Alliance Church last year to drop off the 42 boxes I put together amongst family and friends, I was in complete awe. It was truly that moment of realization and a level of satisfaction that cannot be put into words. As a Canadian citizen, we definitely don’t realize how fortunate we are for the food we have, clothes we wear and shelter we live in. We take life’s fundamental blessings for granted, not appreciating what others are struggling for day in and out. When these children receive these boxes, they save every little bit. For instance, if there boxes are gift wrapped they remove the gift paper and tape it over their beds.
On a more positive note, this year I was determined to do 100 boxes and well I will reveal the grand total at the end of this blog post 😉 I personally put together two boxes, both for girls and I coordinated them to a Hello Kitty and Disney Princess theme… I thought they were too cute! I get this opportunity only once every year and I truly believe in the motto of putting your heart into everything or simply not even bothering.
My best friend, Sandeep Ratnam and I went to go drop off the boxes yesterday at noon! It was nice to have the volunteer organizers of Operation Christmas Child recognize me from the previous year. We hung out for a bit, snapped some pictures and had a chance to talk to them about numbers in particular.
Surrey Alliance Church itself had collected nearly 6000 boxes this year!! Pretty amazing! All of the boxes collected from BC were just about to be picked up and driven to the Calgary processing centre. The total amount of boxes from Calgary and BC will be shipped to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Venezuela, Ivory Coast and Haiti! We were very pleased to hear that 500,000 boxes will be sent to the Philippines as well.
As for how many boxes we did as a group … 102 boxes this year! Definitely Operation Success!! A huge shout out, thank you and a big pat on the back to everyone who participated! Each and every one of you will put a smile on a child’s face this Christmas and that itself is the greatest Christmas gift. Thank you again and I hope to get in touch with all of you and many more new faces next year. Happy Holidays!
