– What is Denim Day? –
A rape prevention education campaign organized by Peace Over Violence where American citizens are encouraged to wear jeans to protest against sexual violence and rape.
– The 411 (Source – Wikipedia)-
(1992) A 45 year old driving instructor allegedly raped an 18 year old girl when he picked her up for her first driving lesson. With the support of her parents the victim decided to press charges and the rapist was convicted and sentenced
(1998) The Italian Supreme Court inverted the conviction in reason to the victim wearing really, tight jeans. The case was argued that “the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them … and by removing the jeans … it was no longer rape but consensual sex” The Italian Supreme Court also stated that “it is a fact of common experience that it is nearly impossible to slip off tight jeans even partly without the active collaboration of the person who is wearing them”
(2008) The Italian Supreme Court inverted their findings and ‘denim’ is no longer a defence to the charge of sexual assault.
(2011) 20+ US states come together in unity in support of Denim Day every April; jeans have become an international symbol of protest against sexual violence and rape.
